Gadis Kretek is an Indonesian Netflix original series set in the 1960s, weaving a tale of love, rivalry, and mystery against the backdrop of the nation’s rich tradition of kretek (clove cigarettes) and the power struggles within it.
The slow burn of Kretek
The direction to the title sequence of Gadis Kretek invites viewers into the sensory world of kretek, featuring the iconic and enchanting crackle of clove buds as they lit. This sound sets the tone for a story about two of Indonesia’s richest families in the kretek industry, blending mystery and romance.
The typography is designed to echo the opulence of old money, reflecting the lifestyle of these powerful families, with letters flickering to life like burning kretek, mirroring lies that are burnt to ashes in the series. Accompanying this visual are the soft sounds of a woman’s breath, highlighting the important the main character who plays a key role in the industry.
